With the 2011 SXSW Festival having just wrapped up, we share some insights and observations, a loose guide for the all future SXSW festivities. I realized buried in the large crowd standing around the Gowalla airstream this year, that there’s really only one way to do SXSW, all in. Remove all great expectations of of getting lucky with a short line or a quiet space. It’s a happening, you must give yourself up and embrace the phenomenon one hundred percent. Once you’ve loosened your tie and taken a few deep breaths, smile. Once every year everyone (that’s what it feels like) comes to Austin. Well, perhaps twice a year if you include Austin City Limits festival, but to the point. For the first time ever I found the movement to be fascinating and beautiful in some regards. Literally every open space downtown became a stage. Every nook filled with a food vendor, and not just hotdogs, but actual cuisine. Everyone has a voice in this one week where we all become a unified organism in pursuit of all things new and inspiring. Be it a movie, music the latest gadget or technological advance, the future is here in our own backyard. A preview for all to see. This festival can launch careers, break new bands or showcase a new voice in cinema. It matters. Frustrating as it may be to Austinites who suffer with increased traffic, tourists, and packed restaurants - it’s worth the annoyance. It’s amazing to see how this festival has evolved and if you’ve never experienced it, you must. In our opinion, give SXSW a big ol’ bear hug and pinch it’s cheeks. It’s all happening, if your ever on the fence, we suggest, badge or not, just head downtown, forget a schedule, take a look around and go all in.
In the Spring of 2008, BMW of Austin approached us about helping their team bring the first MINI Cooper dealership to Austin. Together, we pitched “MINI and Austin – A Natural Fit,” to MINI USA, and they agreed; Austin needed MINI and MINI needed Austin.
The long-awaited launch of MINI of Austin ended in April of 2010 with the Grand Opening and the “One of One Hundred” Campaign. The first one hundred MINIs came with a collector’s edition grill badge, one year of 25% off on gear and accessories, performance driving instruction with a professional driver, and a collector’s edition 1 of 100 key fob and hat. We also wrote a tagline for MINI of Austin that fits with the heart and soul of this bulldog auto: The Official Sponsor of the Adrenal Gland. The campaign included print, radio, and television advertising, and the first 100 MINIs were sold in 35 days! It was one of the top five openings for MINI in the United States.
